Arrábida Natural Park, Geology

Of particular importance, the existence of some rocky outcrops, particularly white South limestone and North gray that generate plenty of caves. Noted the existence of the gap known Arrábida a sedimentary rock composed of large, angular fragments, in the middle of a mass of cement comprised of thinner material. Much appreciated as an ornamental rock, is commonly known as “marble Arrábida”, despite not being a metamorphic rock.

Only in Portugal and probably in the world, was widely used in local churches and chapels. However the quarry where it was extracted was closed in the 70´s. In the present, is still used by the bodies of Setúbal in inaugural plates.
